Social media marketing is important because brand awareness and repeat business have increasingly become essential to business survival. Having a fan-base on social media provides a platform to facilitate sharing content, which can grow exponentially over time.

Social media marketing provides traffic growth outside of search engines that can produce amazing results. With a fan base of over 10,000 people, it is possible to publish content and have hundreds of thousands of views within a week. While search engine traffic is more long-lasting, it works completely different and takes time to develop.

To be successful at social media marketing, it is important to know that there are essentials capable of derailing a marketing strategy if not followed.

It is necessary to research and know your target audience, as well as to focus on adding value to their experience. It's also important to interact with fans and for you to be more concerned with having engaged fans, instead of the actual total number of fans.

Know Your Target Audience

Researching your target audience is vital to any marketing or advertising campaign, and not knowing your audience is one of the biggest mistakes beginning entrepreneurs make.

Make a description of your ideal customer and focus your efforts on them. Who are they? Where do they live? What are their hobbies? What are their habits? What interests them and inspires them?

You will want to research information on your markets' demographic, geographic, psychographic, and behavioristic characteristics.

  • Demographic: Age, Gender, Education, Income, etc.
  • Geographic: Country, City, etc.
  • Psychographic: Interests, Values, Lifestyle, Social Class, etc.
  • Behavioristic: Habits, Buying Pattern,etc.

Don't try to be all things to all people. When giant companies develop an advertisement campaign, they have a particular type of person in mind. They aren't concerned about everyone else who doesn't fit their target audience.

Knowing your target audience is also essential because otherwise you will not know how to add value to the visitor experience.

Focus on Adding Value

A key to a successful social media marketing strategy is to focus on adding value. Customers purchase from businesses because it benefits them. They do not care about how it will benefit the business. This is why focusing on benefits sells better than focusing on features.

In social media marketing, it is necessary to add value to the experience. You want visitors to enjoy your content. While sales are important, overly selling to fans will only destroy the experience since it communicates that the business is only concerned about its own needs, not theirs.

Engage your fans by providing content that is interesting, relevant, educational, and/or exciting. The goal is to create a positive experience that will keep them engaged in your content instead of one of the hundreds of other companies they follow.

Creating a positive experience also improves the shareability of the content.

Interact with Fans

Interact with your fans just like you would if they were with you in person. The more you interact, the more engaging your page will become. The purpose of social media marketing is to build relationships with a loyal fan-base who provide repeat business, either by sharing content or actually making purchases.

Focus on Quality of Likes

It is better to have 100 fans who are engaged in your social media marketing than to have 100,000 or even a million fans who ignore you. The quality of your likes is more important than the quantity, which is why adding valuable content, interacting with fans, and getting them engaged is so important. Building that relationship and creating a positive brand awareness will benefit your company for years to come.

Tips for a Successful Social Media Marketing Strategy

Since the goal of social media marketing is to engage fans and make your content shareable, make sure to use pictures in your content posts. Content with relevant pictures has been proven to always get significantly more views and shares.

Also, don't be afraid of negative comments about a topic. While there are many factors that influence shareability, debatable subjects encourage engagement. However, definitely be concerned about negative comments directed towards your company, or brand, and try to remedy the situation. Realize, though, that it is impossible to please everyone.

Be Patient

Social media marketing and developing a solid fan-base takes time. Be persistent, but patient. No highly valued pursuit can be accomplished in a day. It takes time, work, and perseverance.
